Postcard Eats: GIBBS’ Hot Wings and What’s New

ewGibbs’ Hot Wings is one of Cebu’s most famous hole-in-the-wall new restaurants and their hot wings are comfort food of choice to many Cebuanos. Reputed for being the best wings in town, I adore the unique flavors of hot wings and their careful selection of craft beers. Coy sure knows his beers.

My personal favorite–the Angel Wings!

Gibbs Hot Wings Beers. They also carry a good selection of local craft beers by Cebruery!

I personally love their Angel Wings (affectionately called ‘Carbonara Wings’) because I can’t handle my spice as much as some people could. If you love your spicy, you can choose the spiciness level from 1 to 5.

They started in a small and humble manner. The owner, Coy Oliva, used to drink with friends at home and his wife’s hot wings was the crew’s pulutan of choice. The hot wings were a hit: his friends requested for them all the time, and eventually started ordering them to bring to their family and friends. One friend suggested to them that they should sell their hot wings.

Gibbs’ started as a small-hole-in-the-wall in the extra space of the owner’s house. The hot wings were such a big hit, that within months the owners opened their second shop in Streetscape, Maria Luisa Road, Banilad, Cebu City.

So, What’s New with Gibbs’?

On our media launch last week, we were the first to know the many exciting news for Gibbs’ Hot Wings. First, introducing their newest on the menu: Their Cajun Hot Wings. It had just the right amount of spicy and smoky flavor.

Second, Gibbs’ Hot Wings has partnered with Zomato for delivery orders. You can get your hot wings fix conveniently at the comforts of your home by just ordering via the Zomato app.

Lastly, Gibbs’ has announced that they will be opening their second branch at Robinsons Galleria Cebu, set to open later this year. A very interesting year ahead for Gibbs’!

Postcard Eats: The Suite Room’s Ice Cream Cakes

I must’ve been living under a rock, because I only recently knew about this piece of heaven.

Of course I’ve heard of The Suite Room. The Suite Room is located at Ayala Center Cebu Rooftop and Ramos branch (their pioneer branch). It is part of the Casa Verde group and is often known as the more posh and upscale version of the Casa Verde. I’ve tried Suite Room’s main course and steaks, and these were quite good.

This entry however isn’t about The Suite Room’s main course menu. We take a closer look at their dessert choices, particularly their honest-to-goodness ice cream cakes.

They have six different ice cream cake flavors, While they are all so good, everyone has their own preferences as well. As I devoured every spoonful, I kept on thinking: ‘where were you all my life?!’

Okay, that was a bit of overkill. Still, I love ice cream and I love cake. I thank Babe for Food for bringing me here and introducing me to what will be a new cheat favorite. These are their ice cakes’ six different offerings: Matcha Green Tea, Apple Cinnamon Raisin PIe, Caramel Macchiato, Mixed Berry, Double Strawberry and Peach Mango Ice Cake. The serving is huge! One order costs Php 238.

  • Matcha Green Tea Ice Cake

My favorite. It’s not too sweet, and the slightly bitter taste of matcha perfectly cleanses the palate making it the perfect dish to cap off a full course meal. Matcha green tea paired with cream cheese is genius. I would have this all the time.

  • Apple Cinnamon Raisin Pie Ice Cake

This is the frozen version of the All-American favorite dessert, the apple pie. I always have my apple pie warm, but this one I don’t mind served cold at all. The cinnamon smells tempting!

  • Caramel Macchiato Ice Cake

Caramel Macchiato is the frozen cake version of the beloved coffee drink. This is my friend Justinne’s favorite. Caramel Macchiato is rich, flavorful and sinful.

  • Mixed Berry Ice Cake

A surprising favorite to most of us! It’s something I would order to share with girlfriends who want to eat something sweet, but not be too guilty about it (Hey, it’s berries! High in antioxidants!)

  • Double Strawberry Ice Cake

Double Strawberry was another satisfying one. Probably children’s favorite, and my son could probably eat all this on his own. He hates sharing his desserts!

  • Peach Mango Pie Ice Cake

Another frozen version of the famous Jollibee Peach Mango Pie. Peaches and mangoes are always a great combination.

I’m no food blogger, so I’ve easily run out of things to say to describe food! Let us know what you think of The Suite Room’s ice cakes. Which flavor is your favorite?

Around Cebu: Starbucks PH New Offers and my First Coffee Tasting Experience

As a traveler, I collect stuff. Souvenirs provide great memories to trips and unforgettable experiences. I started my Starbucks mug collection last 2014 and it’s the first store I look for in every city I’ve been.

starbucks travel mug collection

As an advertising graduate and later, an educator, I appreciate the brand marketing and PR efforts. They appropriately reach out to its customers and create meaningful relationships with them. As part of Cebu Bloggers Society, I was invited to their coffee tasting event so we could sample their latest food and drink offers.

It was my first coffee tasting experience and a very educational one for a coffee novice like me. We were asked to smell the coffee, and to sample it hot, iced and blended. We were asked to share stories, and to remember experiences as we sampled the taste and aroma of the particular coffee bean.

I didn’t know there were a million ways to define coffee. I thought ‘coffee’ was only meant to be bitter… and never would i have described it as ‘citrusy’, ‘berry-like’, ‘nutty’ or ‘alkaline’!

As a writer, I consume a lot of coffee and tea. Coffee keeps me awake, and tea keeps me relaxed. Without the two I will be either slightly neurotic or completely useless with the pen.

Their new offers are interesting, because they are a bit of blend of both my elixirs: The Chocolate Black Tea Frappuccino with Earl Grey Jelly and the Double Chocolate Green Frappuccino. A perfect combination of energizing and refreshing anyone on a hot day this summer. (Wait, what am I talking about. This is the Philippines–it’s always summer!)

As a foodie, I am pretty psyched about their new items too. Pair these reinvigorating drinks with their new food items such as the Purple Yam Cheesecake (with red bean and macapuno..yum!), Chicken Milk Bun and Parmagiana Wrap.

Finally, as an environmentalist, I appreciate Starbucks efforts to be more green and to encourage their customers to be green. The new Starbucks BPA-free cup is means it’s reusable, recyclable and re-enjoyable. Every time you bring these cups in, you get a discount off your order. These are all responsible efforts to the company’s waste reduction objective.

Postcard Eats: Hamakaze, Authentically Japanese

We gave a toast as we started drinking and eating in Hamakaze, a tiny restaurant nestled in A.S. Fortuna, right beside Oftana Suites and across the new Jollibee.

Admittedly, I am not so well-versed with the Japanese pop culture and like. I never got into the whole manga thing as a child; and despite having been to Japan before, my knowledge on Japan culture is dismal.

Well, this is embarrassing.

Thus, the invite to Hamakaze with the rest of the Cebu Bloggers Society was like a Japanese food crash course. Ramen shops have been popping up like mushrooms in Cebu lately, so getting some pointers on how to order in a ramen shop truly helps!

We were greeted by the owner Taka-san, a Japanese based in Singapore. Hamakaze is his 11th restaurant venture across Southeast Asia.

According to Taka-san, ramen is the national drunk food in Japan (as ‘pochero’ is in Cebu), hence they are open after hours–from 6PM until 5AM. Good news for the party goers (although this might change after Duterte’s curfew implementation…)

Price range per dish is around P230-P300. Click on the menu to see the hi-res version.

To work up our appetite, we were served Gyoza, Japanese fried dumplings, Tori Kaage, Japanese-style fried chicken with Kimuchi Chahan, Japanese-style fried rice on the side. The Fried Chicken was a big hit. We paired the food with different types of iced tea, which were refreshing and not as sweet as what most of the restaurants in Cebu serve (if you like it sweeter, you can always ask for some sugar syrup).

Types of Ramen

Ramen is a Japanese noodle soup dish

Call me ignorant, but I didn’t know there were that many types of ramen! I don’t want to go too technical, so here are just some of the basic types we got to try in the restaurant.

  1. Reimen (Cold Ramen)

cold ramen cebu japanese restaurant

Zaru Ramen is basically ramen without the broth–a kind of salad on a plate with different toppings. Taka-san shares that Zaru Ramen is seasonally offered in China, especially during summer season when it is too warm to have the typical hot ramen.

2. Yakisoba (Oily Ramen)

oily ramen hamakaze

Also ramen without the hot broth, but instead the noodles are stir-fried, tossed with different toppings on top.

3. Shoyu Ramen (Ramen with Clear Broth)

The most commonly known type,

4. Tonkotsu Ramen (Collagen Soup)

collagen soup ramen cebu

Tori Ramen or Collagen soup usually has a rich, cloudy broth, achieved by boiling pork bone, fat and collagen over high heat for at least eight hours.

Collagen is esteemed to have anti-aging effects reputed to be better than botox, with active ingredients that strengthen the joints, bones, skin and hair. Now–that makes this ramen my favorite!

5. Tsukemen (Japanese Dipping Noodles)

hamakaze as fortuna collagen

This is the most unique one I tried and a recommended must-have if you dine in Hamakaze! Japanese Dipping noodles consist of separate bowls, one containing noodles and another of the soup. Simply take a few strands of noodles and dip into the collagen soup!

Hamakaze is open daily from 12PM-3:30PM for lunch and 6:30PM-5AM for dinner and after hours. Hamakaze is located at AYS Bldg., A.S. Fortuna, Mandaue City. Contact number: (032) 505-4220. Check their FB Page here.

Postcard Eats: Mooshi Green Bar Advocates Cebuano Healthy Lifestyle

During the last two years, I have made several half-attempts to go vegan.

Trust me, I didn’t go too far with my declarations. It’s so difficult to be a vegan in the Philippines. Case on point: I order just a salad in a cafe in the Philippines. The whole kitchen seems to find this insulting and returns to me a plate with more dressing than greens.

The notion of ‘vegetarian’ or ‘vegan’ seems like absurd ideas in the Philippines. In a country where junk food is cheaper than fruits, unhealthy food are cheaper, saltier, tastier–hence preferred.

healthy food advocacy cebu.jpg

It has only been pretty recent when health and nutrition awareness has improved. People are now taking a more proactive role in getting fit, eating healthy and living better. We still have a long way to go, but initiatives from individuals and businesses helped expand the once-little niche of clean eating.

Mooshi Green Bar opened their newest branch in Filinvest Cyberzone IT Park Lahug, Cebu City, at the very heart of Cebu’s booming BPO industry. It is the first ever branch that is an actual cafe and not just a juice bar; offering healthy light meals, pastas and salads along with their green smoothies and fresh juices.

As you all know, the BPO industry promotes an very unhealthy lifestyle: unhealthy diet, stress, irregular body clock and a sedentary work environment, and to some extent, a smoking culture. Thus it is great that Mooshi is located in the heart of Cebu’s booming BPO industry, IT Park, Lahug–bringing healthy food closer to the bulk of Cebu’s white collar force.

This is done in cooperation with The Lazy Chef a.k.a. Chip Lopez who created the menu for Mooshi. This collaboration is an important keyword for me. Chip Lopez, in my opinion, is such a strong influencer in  clean eating; she is among the few names I trust in green advocacy.

Chip Lopez (The Lazy Chef) talks about her collaboration with Mooshi in coming up with the menu

Chip created the menu with wholesome ingredients, giving a healthy twist to classic favorites. Their pasta, dressing and sauces are all made from scratch, preservative-free.

Some of my favorite appetizers were the Fresh Quinoa Rolls, Flatbread with Herbed Cheese and quirkily named kale-sadilla.

Pasta dishes are always a classic bestseller. Malunggay Fettuccine, Three-Cheese Lasagna and Chicken Mushroom Alfredo are some good choices among the pasta selections.

The salads in Mooshi I recommend are the Feel Good Salad with their and Mango-Maca dressing and the Earth Bowl, which is a mix of leafy greens, sweet potato, chickpeas, quinoa and other vegetables.

For drinks, I always prefer the Happy Mooshi and I love their Spinach Yogurt Ice Cream.

They serve breakfast food, too! Open the day with Mooshi’s Baked Eggs, Mushroom Benedict, Waffles, Chorizo Fajita and if you want the whole breakfast shenanigan, the Mooshi Breakfast Club.

Mooshi has partnered with local farmers in only sourcing the freshest ingredients: native eggs, free range chickens, grass-fed beef and pork, organic vegetables, sea salt, and liquid aminos instead of soy sauce.

The best thing about eating green is you feel full, but not yucky (in bisaya, ‘bidli‘) after a full meal.

Postcard Eats: Zark’s Burgers Now in Cebu!

Update Aug 2016: Zark’s Burgers now has two branches in Cebu–SM City Cebu and in IT Park Eblock Tower 1!

My New Year’s Resolution for 2016 was the same as most people: to get fit and healthy. I was awesome for the first few weeks of the year, started with a strong diet plan, regular exercise and minimal alcohol, until I relapsed on the third week of the year. Sinulog happened.

It’s not too late to redeem myself, I comforted myself as February rolled. After getting over my guilt trip, I quickly rebound and paraded another #newyearnewme promise, because it’s Chinese New Year anyway–even if technically I’m not Chinese, the occasion helps call for restarting my resolution.

After CNY, I worked out almost everyday, doing yoga and crossfit consequently in one session–it felt like I was angry with myself. On my fifth day of the sweat life, Justinne a.k.a. the Babe for Food texted me to come with her to the opening of Zark’s Burgers, if I wasn’t busy. Except for yoga at 7:45pm, I’m pretty much free. Hmmm. Yup. I’ve heard of Zark’s.

This should be interesting.

zarks burger now in cebu

And it was an eventful day. For one, I got into a minor car accident before arriving to Zark’s in SM City Cebu. For another, when I got there (in one piece!) I was welcomed by the Zark himself, who flew in from Manila for the opening of their first Cebu branch.

postcardpretty babeforfood zark
Thank you for having us, Zark!

The SM City Cebu branch will be their 15th branch nationwide and 2nd branch in Visayas. They also plan to open another Cebu branch within the year, location to be confirmed.

Zark’s mantra was, ‘the greasier, the better’. One look at the menu and I knew I’m in trouble. Everything was like food porn. Someone’s going to be naughty tonight… The menu was fun to read; it was hard to choose which burger to devour.

A big fan of bacon, I finally decided on the Deep-Fried Bacon Wrapped Burger.

Deep Fried Bacon Burger with Barbecue Rum Sauce
This is what the Bacon Wrapped Burger looks like inside

And I wasn’t disappointed. Bacon is bacon after all. But the barbecue rum sauce that came with it pleasantly surprised me.

Justinne chose the infamous Jawbreaker, as her friend The Pickiest Eater has been staunchly recommending it.

The Jawbreaker. Make love to the food.

The burgers were massive for a duo of girls. It wasn’t easy to have greasy burgers between your fingers and trying to devour them with feminine grace and composure. We could hardly finish it all, and then their manager Julio returned and said, ‘So those were your appetizers–are you ready for your main course?’

Oh gosh. We had to choose two more burgers to try. I was already eyeing on the Luther Burger–which is double cheeseburger with honey-glazed donuts as buns. I thought it was a weird combination–sweet and salty? Donuts and meat are from two entirely different food categories–is Zark sure about this?

Luther Burger. Glory.

When it came, it was a glory box.

The taste was, in summary, ‘interesting’. For the more adventurous set of tastebuds, opt for this baby. I mean I’m not quite sure what it tastes like, but it was an explosion of flavors of sorts.

My friend got the Candy Bacon Burger, which is essentially cheeseburger with caramelized bacon. The Candy Bacon Burger tasted good, but after trying daring choices such as the Jawbreaker and the Luther, it felt a bit tame compared to the previous ones.

more zarks burgers

So did two ladies finish it all? We may look like gluttons, but we had to call reinforcements. Thank God Apollo and the Quibranza brothers arrived!

luis quibranza justinne go apollo santos
Our reinforcements! Wasn’t so fun being seventh wheel though.

The best thing about Zark’s is they don’t scrimp on ingredients and give you everything they have in the kitchen. It feels good value on your money. Zark’s burgers are big boys, they probably eat other burgers for breakfast.

We were too chicken to try the Tombstone though, which is a two-pound cheeseburger with an equivalent of eight patties covered with cheese sauce and 500g of fries. If you finish the behemoth burger in ten minutes, you get a free t-shirt and your photo on the Hall of Fame. Hmmm. Maybe another time!

Price range is around P110-P150 for their Minor League Burgers, P210-P555 for their Major League Brugers, P80-P150 for their other meals and P120-P150 for their desserts.

Here’s the menu, click on image for high-res:

It’s ironic that my licensed nutritionist friend ruined my whole week of sweat work for me– she was a foodie first; and when it comes to good food, I trust her with my life.

Ah well. Zark’s Burgers has since haunted me with burger dreams for the last few nights, but it was the perfect cheat meal for the month.

postcard pretty eats zarks
My tastebuds enjoyed it. You can see it in my inflated cheeks.

Zark’s Burgers is now open in Cebu at SM City Cebu by Sunburst and Motoworld, and in IT Park E-block Tower 1. Follow Zark’s Burgers on their Facebook Page  and Instagram and Twitter @zarksburgers.

Postcard Eats: Marissa’s Kitchen

I have a secret to tell. I know where the best sylvanas in town are. And, they’re proudly Cebuano-made.

It’s made in a quaint little bakery smack in the busy streets of Talamban; inside Marissa’s Kitchen.

marissas kitchen storefront

Marissa’s Kitchen is the brainchild of Marissa Unchuan, yes, the famous wedding cake maker, but she’s also known for one other thing (at least to me and her loyal customers): her heaven-sent silvanas.

classic silvanas

Marissa’s silvanas are only Php 275/pack, which has around 16-20 pcs in it (I didn’t get to properly count–we finished them too quickly!). They are available in Classic, Pistachio and Salted Caramel–the latter is my personal favorite!

Marissa Unchuan has a whole range of sinful baked goodies, which you can see from the menu:

In fact, we (meaning, my tastebuds and I) were so pleased about everything that I immediately decided to have my son’s birthday cake made. Here’s what the amazing Marissa did for Caleb’s cowboy-themed party:

Gorgeous cake! They didn’t disappoint

Cake orders can be picked up from the store. You can come to the store to order cakes, bread and pastries. You can also choose to chill there in the shop and order other drinks and desserts–they have available wi-fi.

Marissa’s Kitchen is located at Go–Shen Building, Gov. M. Cuenco Ave, Talamban Cebu City. Just after Piazza Elesia, Marissa’s Kitchen is right beside Alberto’s Pizza.

Postcard Eats: Tatang’s Boneless Lechon

In every important occasion in the Philippines, lechon is always the centerpiece in the Filipino dinner table. If there is no lechon, you can expect some level of disappointment to your guests–it’s like the star failing to appear for his fans on his meet-and-greet.

Unbeknownst to many, lechon is not an exclusive Filipino dish. ‘Lechon‘ is a Spanish term for a whole roasted pig cooked over charcoal. It is a popular dish in the Philippines, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Latin America.

Cebu is known as the lechon capital of the world. So when in Cebu, one should always try lechon. This time, I checked out this modest establishment in Wilson St., Lahug called Tatang’s Boneless Lechon. It’s located on the same street lined many other well known restaurants such as Fujinoya, Pino, Manggahan, etc.

tatangs boneless lechon

Tatang’s is best known for it’s boneless lechon. To those who are uninformed, boneless lechon is the whole pork belly deboned and infused with herbs and spices then roasted.

tatangs lechon belly boneless

I’ve been a loyal patron of Tatang’s, but I didn’t know they had a full menu as well. Who knew you could create plenty of interesting dishes from one whole pig alone?

As a starter, we tried the lechon wraps a la Peking duck wraps. Very interesting concept, and tasty, too! You can book your very own Tatang’s lechon wrap station for your events and other special occasions.

Now on to main course. Some of the interesting dishes they created out of lechon are: Lechon Flakes, Crispy Dinuguan, Lechon Kare-kare and Lechon Lumpia. All mouth-watering, it’s hard to choose a favorite.

Postcard Eats: 10 Dove Street Confectionery

A place where Pinterest dreams are made of.

ten dove street as fortuna cebu

Early last week, I was invited to the Grand Launching of 10 Dove Street Confectionery in Oakridge, A.S. Fortuna. 10 D.C. is one of Cebu’s best dessert places with their charming homemade cakes and pastries.

Everything inside is eye candy–or in today’s generation, ‘Instagram-worthy’. Set in nostalgic Victorian candy shop interiors with a creamy white palette and pastel blue details, 10 D.C. is the perfect place for a breakfast club, a Sundate with mom, or a quick catch-up with the girls over English breakfast tea and cake.

I couldn’t choose which of the cakes to try (everything looked so good!). So I was told by staff that the Chocolate Decadence, Ube Cake and Fruit Medley are their ultimate bestsellers. I chose the latter to go with my Chocolate Shake, and later commended myself for the wise choice.

I like how 10 DC cakes are full of flavor but doesn’t feel heavy nor sinful. The cakes taste real and homemade–something your beloved tita would make.

Aside from their usual bestsellers, they also have interesting cakes for more daring tastebuds. On my next visit I might try their Red Velvet Cheesecake, Green Tea Layer Cake and Carrot Pineapple Cake.

Seriously, who needs friends when there’s cake?
